World Breastfeeding Week

World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated annually from August 1st to 7th (1), highlighting the importance of breastfeeding as one of the most powerful ways to promote child health and survival. Despite the World Health Organization's (WHO) recommendations, less than half of infants under six months old are exclusively breastfed. This week aims to raise awareness and encourage action to improve breastfeeding rates globally. Breastmilk is the perfect nourishment for infants: it is safe, clean, and rich in antibodies that protect against many common childhood illnesses. In the first months of life, breast milk provides all the energy and nutrients a baby needs. It continues to meet up to half or more of a child's nutritional requirements during the latter half of the first year and up to one-third during the second year. Breastfed children often perform better on intelligence tests, have a lower risk of being overweight or obese, and are less likely to develop diabetes later in life. Additionally, mothers who breastfeed benefit from a reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancers. World Breastfeeding Week is not only about promoting the physical health benefits of breastfeeding but also about fostering the deep bond between mother and child. This profound connection lays the foundation for a healthier, happier future for both. Join us in celebrating World Breastfeeding Week and supporting mothers everywhere in their breastfeeding journey (2).
